What is Canonical Tag?

Definition

A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the preferred version when similar or duplicate pages exist.

Also known as:rel=canonical

Common situations

Filter URLs, tracking parameters and print versions can all create near-duplicates. A self-referencing canonical on the main page helps consolidate those signals, though Google treats it as a hint.
